Adult Study Groups –

"

Mere listening to my yajnas will not add to your beauty. These ideas are to be reflected deeply and digested slowly. This process is hastened only when you discuss what you have studied with others. Devi/Study Groups constitute the heart of our mission. The ideas gathered by you, when discussed with others, not only become deeply rooted in yourself, but as they become clearer in your own understanding, they also inspire those who listen to you. Thus, each student, while trying to strengthen his own understanding, can become an instrument for the spread of this knowledge. This process is the dynamic STUDY SCHEME followed in the Vedantic tradition. This is not a Chinmaya methodology, it is the most ancient Vedantic tradition of study.

- Param Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda

The most important follow-up measure of the Gnana Yagnas is the Study Group program. The basic concept of the Study Group is to study the scriptures by those who have curiosity/thirst to benefit from the perennial wisdom of the Rishis.

A group of 1O- 15 like minded people get together at a place, time and day mutually agreed upon for 90 minutes a week for a systematic study of the scriptural texts prescribed in the Study Group Scheme by Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda after testing its validity over several years.  A few thousands of Study Groups function under the guidance of Chinmaya Mission Centers around the world.

Frequently Asked Questions about Study groups

1. Who can join a study group?

Anyone who has the interest and commitment to undertake the study program is welcome to join.

2. What type of commitment do I have to make?

You have to make a commitment to study the scriptures and participate regularly each week in the discussion group without giving excuses for non-participation and attendance. Those who claim to have no time in their life for such activity will find in due course that they will have more time not only to their secular duties but also to do them well and manage their time much more efficiently after participating in study group.

3. Do I have to know Sanskrit?

No need to know Sanskrit.  However, if you know, it is of course a good thing since all the scriptures are in that language.

But the group leader will explain some words in the Sanskrit language and these may be essential to remember. All chanting in the class will be done in Sanskrit, since they are readings from the original text, which is written in Sanskrit.  Those who may need extra help in pronunciation can approach the study group leader either before or after the discussion.

4. Is there a fee to join the study group?

No, there is no individual fee to join the study group; it is included in your CM membership fee.

5. How can I join a study group?

See the list above for different the study groups, please pick the one that suits your needs.

6. I have never studied Vedanta. Can I attend the study classes?

Yes, you can. We show various DVDs of Chinmaya Mission lectures from time to time and you may also take advantage of those classes. There also DVDs made of the lectures given by Swamijis available for purchase for you to listen and come up to speed in any of the scriptural texts.

7. Can our youngsters join the study group?

Typically they should be older than 18 years to benefit from this program.  For the younger age-group, we have Bala Vihar programs specifically geared towards their age-group; we recommend that you take advantage of these programs.

8. Can I join when study group is already started studying several verses of the text?

You can. You will have to put in a little extra effort to come up to speed with the rest of the members of the group.
